Committee approves rewrite to make mayor part-time and shift duties to city manager

Chairman Darby, the sponsor, described House Bill 2645 as a comprehensive rewrite of a municipal charter that would change the mayor to a part-time role and transfer most executive duties to a city manager. "What they're want to do is change the mayor to a part time position and move it pretty much his duties to a city manager," the sponsor said.
Representative Pearson asked which changes were the most substantial; the sponsor reiterated the shift of executive duties to an appointed manager. With no additional questions, the committee proceeded under no objection to a voice vote and the clerk reported 12 ayes; the bill passed and will go to State and Local Government.
