Commission approves one-day Tire Day pilot to reduce illegal dumping, with weight limits and discounted overage

"Our goal would be to do it a Saturday in June from 9AM to 3PM," Craig said, proposing a free weight allowance (1000 lb in the draft) per vehicle and discounted rates for excess tires, with farmers and residents eligible and local businesses excluded. He also recommended no rims in the tires brought for removal and direct separation of metal.
Commissioners expressed concern about potential abuse and costs; staff suggested vehicle verification (Ellis County tag) and a one-day trial to gauge participation and expense. The commission agreed to run a one-day pilot, have staff finalize the weight threshold and logistics, and report back on results.
The county will set rules on acceptable loads, potential caps per vehicle, and close gates at the published end time to discourage late dumping.
