Board hears proposal for bicycle pump track and skateboard half pipe; residents raise safety and noise concerns

The Carmel Valley Recreation and Park District board on March 11 heard a proposal from local volunteers to install a bicycle pump track at the east gravel parking lot and a skateboard half pipe at the former volleyball court.
President Alex Gray introduced the request submitted by Rochelle Winsted (who also goes by Rachelle Baker) and Rodney Rodriquez of the Carmel Valley Pump Track Crew; the proposers described the project as a youth recreational opportunity that volunteers would largely build and maintain and said volunteers would handle construction, maintenance and any insurance needs. Nearby residents from the Village Greens neighborhood, and others in attendance, raised several objections, including that the park locations cited are not safe for those activities, that noise and unsupervised youth could increase, that vandalism is already a concern and that the Park District’s liability exposure could rise. Board members asked questions of both proponents and opponents. The board took no final vote and continued the topic for a future meeting.
