Sheriff says 859.09 hours of sick leave unpaid; board tables handbook rewrite

County Sheriff Brad Hudson told the Van Buren County Board of Supervisors that he has not received payment for 859.09 hours of accumulated sick leave that transferred to his benefit leave bank when he moved from chief deputy to county sheriff in January. Hudson raised the issue during the Feb. 10 meeting and asked the board to consider payout under the county’s policies.
County Auditor Lisa Plecker provided the board a copy of the current employee-handbook policy and explained that, under the county’s long-standing interpretation, accumulated sick leave has been paid out only when an employee retires. The board expressed concern that accrued benefits earned in non-elected positions are not being paid out upon reclassification and tabled the matter until a proposed re-write of the employee handbook is brought back for their consideration.
