Health administrator: WIC reduced to two days; three pertussis-symptomatic cases reported

Cheryl Hoberecht, Pawnee County Health Administrator, told the commissioners the county will reduce local WIC clinic days from three days to two days per week for Fiscal Year 2028 because of funding cuts and staffing considerations; nursing staff may need to complete client registration when necessary. The board approved a letter of understanding with Barton County to share a WIC registered dietitian covering Oct. 1, 2026'Sept. 30, 2027 (motion by Burdett, seconded by Miller; motion passes 3-0).
Hoberecht also convened the Board of Health and reported three county residents had symptoms consistent with pertussis ("whooping cough"); she told commissioners the incubation period can be up to 21 days. She reported an immunization audit required a correction plan after vaccines were borrowed between programs and that the department needs to purchase new thermometers for vaccine refrigerators.
