Board approves $126,470 skid steer for District 3 to run forestry head

The Woodbury County board voted unanimously to accept a quote to buy a Caterpillar 275 XC skid steer for District 3 at a price of $126,470.
Secondary Roads Engineer Laura Severs told the board the county’s existing skid steers lacked the necessary power and hydraulic flow to run a recently purchased Dennis Simoff forestry head. “It is a little more than what I expected, because it is a larger, skid steer,” Severs said, adding later, “I still would recommend this Caterpillar 2 75 x c for a $126,470 so that we can, really use that forestry head that we have and, again, all the other purposes that the district 3 will use it for.” The board approved the purchase by voice vote, 5-0.
Severs said the county received a John Deere quote but it “misses all those marks that we’re really looking for,” and therefore staff recommended the Caterpillar model. Severs also told the board the county will not buy a separate trailer for the machine, and will instead use an existing trailer to offset costs.
The decision authorizes department staff to complete procurement and add the new skid steer to District 3’s equipment roster.
