Jay County approves Hays & Sons for courthouse flood repairs, Medler's flooring work

The Jay County Commissioners on Oct. 28 approved emergency repairs after water damage at the courthouse on Sept. 4, 2024, awarding Hays & Sons Construction a contract for $20,720.24 to complete remodeling related to the flood. Courthouse superintendent Bruce Sutton presented three bids and recommended Hays & Sons; Commissioner Rex Journay moved to approve the low bid and Chad Aker seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
Sutton also presented Medler's Furniture quotes to repair carpet and flooring in the circuit court office ($5,240.02) and the assessor's main office ($7,063.97). Sutton said Medler's had been used for prior work and was familiar with county offices; the commissioners approved both Medler's quotes by unanimous vote. "Mustard Seed's quote might end up being less if they were not required to move as much furniture. However, it would still remain the highest quote," Sutton said during the discussion.
The approvals were handled by recorded motions on the floor and reflected in the meeting's claims docket. The county did not request additional competitive bids for the Medler's work because staff said the vendor had performed prior work for the clerk and retirement center.
