Board asks staff for clearer permit guidance after multiple owner confusions

Board members asked the building department and code staff to present clearer, case-specific permit guidance in future hearings after repeated owner confusion about which permits were required for chimney, garage door and lawn work.
At the end of the meeting several board members urged staff to present permit requirements more clearly when cases involve ambiguity over whether work needs a permit. "I would respectfully like to request that on any of the cases that we're hearing related to permits being applied for, not applied for, being needed, not needed, that, perhaps we can have that presented to us," said Gary (board member).
Staff reiterated that the town portal lists checklists for permits and that building inspector Joe is available to answer contractor or owner questions; staff encouraged owners to call earlier in the process. The board said clearer pre-hearing documentation and consistent staff guidance may reduce confusion that can prolong noncompliance.
