Board presents superintendent with strong evaluation; overall score 87.5%

Attorney Erica Powell presented the instrument and the compiled results to the board.
Powell told the board the evaluation covered eight sections including vision and strategic leadership, teaching and learning, equity and student success, operations and finance, governance, stakeholder engagement, organizational management and evaluation/accountability. ‘‘The completed evaluations were turned into my office and sealed until my office calculated, verified, and shared the results with the board president and the superintendent,’’ Powell said, and read indicator averages such as 4.71 for several leadership measures and a districtwide indicator average of 4.38.
The presentation listed strengths ("glows") and areas for improvement ("grows") for each section. Among the glows Powell cited were documented progress on the superintendent's 100-day plan, expanded services for diverse learners, improved transportation and nutrition programs, and stronger public information practices. Areas identified for further work included family engagement, aspects of accelerated math, and more prominent dashboards for certain student groups.
Superintendent Dr. Byrd responded to the board's remarks, thanking members and staff. ‘‘I am both humbled, and honored, of your trust in me, and I'm so thankful that you all believe that we're headed in the right direction,’’ Dr. Byrd said. Board members praised the 100-day plan and cited a notable financial turnaround that one member described in broad terms as moving from a prior deficit to a surplus.
The board noted the evaluation instrument included 40 detailed indicators on a 1'to'5 Likert scale and that comments were categorized for each indicator. Board members acknowledged the evaluation committee's work and thanked the committee lead for crafting the instrument. The board did not take a formal vote on the evaluation itself during the meeting.
The board said the evaluation and its findings would inform ongoing oversight and planning; the superintendent and central office were expected to continue implementing the 100-day plan and report progress to the board.
