Houston County approves seven special exceptions for home-based businesses

The Houston County Board of Commissioners approved seven special-exception permits for home-based businesses after a public hearing in which neighbors raised both support and opposition. Motion by Commissioner Robinson, second by Commissioner Talton, carried unanimously to approve applications #2845 (Victor Primas, Home Care and Assistance), #2847 (Lindsey Hayes, Nurse Staffing Agency), #2849 (David Furtney, Residential & Commercial Painting), #2850 (Nicholas & Megan Andrus, Personal Training), #2851 (Jacob & Daniela McCullough, Non-Emergency Ambulance), #2852 (John & Miliscent Turner, Photography), and #2853 (Alvin Striggles, Framing Contractor). Approved applicants were told to apply for business licenses at the Commissioner's Office.
During the public hearing, Victor Wade and Ainsley Gordon spoke in opposition, noting neighborhood covenants; Mrs. Striggles spoke in favor of an applicant. County Attorney Tom Hall advised that "neighborhood covenants may still impose certain restrictions" and are civil matters that the board does not enforce. Chairman Perdue reiterated that the special-exception process focuses on zoning compliance and that private covenants are separate legal matters.
