San Marcos honors George’s Burgers and Sorrento’s on their 50th anniversaries

Councilmember Danielle LeBlanc presented the San Marcos Inspiration, Leadership, and Excellence (SMILE) awards on July 28 to two long‑running local restaurants, George’s Burgers and Sorrento’s Italian Restaurant, both founded in 1976.
A family representative for George’s Burgers told the council the restaurant was founded by George and Eleni after they immigrated from Greece. "George Burgers was founded in 1976 by my parents, George and Eleni," the family representative said, noting Eleni’s death in August 2025 and thanking the community for years of support. LeBlanc said the awards recognize the small businesses that form the city’s character.
Family members accepted the award for Sorrento’s and described the restaurant as a multigenerational community hub. "If you’ve ever been to Sorrento’s, you’re definitely gonna see family in there," a family member said, noting the owners’ long hours and deep community ties. The council presented certificates and photos, and members encouraged residents to visit the businesses during their anniversary year.
The recognition was part of the council’s proclamations and presentations segment; no formal council action was required beyond the ceremonial presentation.
