Council approves funds for Century Brass environmental compliance work

The council approved a state- and federally-coordinated next phase of environmental compliance work at the Century Brass site.
Public Works Director Jack Healy said the project is historic and ongoing, with a schedule coordinated with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEP) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He described recent monitoring-well sampling and said the appropriation will fund the next-step work plan to address "areas of concern" (AOCs). "This will be addressing the areas of concern...we have to present the work plan to [DEP] and this meets our requirements for the upcoming year," Healy told the council.
Councilors voted to increase the line item as recommended by staff; the finance director confirmed funds are available. Healy said the work includes sampling and remediation planning and that the town will continue to coordinate with state and federal agencies as the project advances.
