Residents describe life-threatening crashes on Regent Road; VDOT to re-evaluate 2021 speed study

Patricia and Demetrius Means told the board a vehicle traveling on Regent Road left the roadway, struck their property and caused injuries; they urged a traffic safety assessment to prevent future tragedies.
Patricia Means said a crash on 02/28/2006 damaged landscaping and injured the driver, and that their home has experienced repeated near misses: "...an individual traveling on Regent Road was involved in a severe accident that occurred on our property... The vehicle lost control due to excessive speed on a turn of the road that has long been known to encourage unsafe driving." She and her husband asked the board and VDOT for speed reductions, rumble strips, guardrails, enhanced signage or a traffic study.
VDOT representative Drew Hammond told the board the district has transmitted the Means' address to traffic engineering and initiated a re-evaluation of the 2021 speed study for Regent Road, including reviewing 85th-percentile speeds and signage alternatives. He said the department will look "to see what additional the department could do, along Regent Road, specifically at that particular location, but they'll also look at the entire roadway." The board and residents also discussed additional enforcement and temporary speed-monitoring measures.
VDOT also noted the Regent Road turn-lane project is in preliminary engineering and construction is now anticipated to start mid-2027 after design delays. Board members asked staff to coordinate follow-ups with the district engineer and the sheriff's office for increased speed monitoring while engineering work continues.
