Residents urge designation to allow golf carts on Lovers Lane, ask VDOT and county to act

Several residents of Lovers Lane told the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors on April 7 that a golf-cart designation would improve mobility and social connection for older neighbors.
Nancy Moore, who identified herself and delivered a signed petition, asked the board to consider the designation and said the street largely meets VDOT criteria: it is a 25-mile-an-hour dead-end with local access only. "We have a number of other residents from Lovers Lane over here to support our effort in getting golf cart friendly designation on Lovers Lane," she told the board and left copies of the petition for staff.
Other speakers described practical benefits and safety practices. Vicky Attardo said her 55-and-over neighborhood uses carts to visit neighbors and that users pull over to let cars pass; Larry Kidd recounted using a golf cart to check on a home and call police when a neighbor failed to respond. Charles Frederickson and Charlie Clow described stronger neighbor ties and said residents are prepared to follow signage and rules.
County staff said the land-use permit and VDOT signage plan have been submitted and revised after VDOT comments; if VDOT accepts the latest revision the county could schedule a public hearing next month. "I submitted that. VDOT has responded and sent comments to me to address... I sent in this morning the newest revision," staff said.
The board did not vote on Lovers Lane on April 7; staff indicated they will place the item on a future agenda when VDOT has finished its review.
