Council and staff agree to add KPIs and workshop strategic plan reporting

Management Services Director Casey Moore demonstrated a public-facing strategic-plan reporting tool and told council staff are preparing quarterly updates and project dashboards. The platform is intended to host goals, project updates, maps of CIP and lane closures, and a downloadable strategic-plan document.
Council asked for more measurable progress reporting. The mayor proposed four top KPIs for a dashboard: percent of budget spent and encumbered, growth in reserves, miles of roads/sidewalks completed or improved (month-to-date and year-to-date comparisons), and year-to-date percent change in sales tax collections. "If we had those four, we have a pretty good idea whether we're headed the right direction," the mayor said. Staff agreed to begin reporting the four KPIs monthly and present a proposed schedule and workshop options in September.
Councilmembers also asked for better linkages between boards/commissions and the council's priorities and suggested using advisory-board input before drafting priorities in future planning sessions. Staff will prepare a proposed schedule, facilitator recommendation and draft KPI dashboard ahead of a September workshop or other planning session.
