Marion County School Board adopts tentative 2026–27 millages and $1.234 billion budget

The Marion County School Board on July 28 adopted tentative millage rates totaling 6.2940 mills and approved a tentative FY2026–27 budget of approximately $1,234,082,612 in a unanimous 5–0 vote.
Superintendent Dr. Danielle Brewer recommended adoption after Chief Financial Officer Rios Welsh reviewed the district’s revenue and spending outlook. Chair Dr. Sarah James called the public hearing and, after hearing no public comment, put the motions to the board. Rev. Dr. Eric Cummings moved to adopt the tentative millages; Dr. Allison Campbell seconded. "We have a balanced budget that is required by law," Welsh said during the presentation.
The adopted millage package includes a required local effort of 3.0280 mills, a prior-period adjustment of 0.018 mills, discretionary operating millage of 0.748 mills, capital improvement millage of 1.5 mills and one additional voted mill, for a combined rate of 6.2940 mills. The board also approved the tentative budget as presented. The superintendent and CFO said the figures will be reviewed in detail during scheduled work sessions on Aug. 6 (general fund) and Aug. 13 (remaining funds), with a placeholder session on Aug. 20 if needed and a final budget hearing in September.
