Sheriff asks Pawnee County to extend deputy raises to Administrative Assistant; commissioners consider pay-scale move

Sheriff Larry Atteberry and Undersheriff Josh Huff met with the Pawnee County Board of Commissioners to request that a courthouse Administrative Assistant receive the same pay increase that had recently been given to Sheriff's Department staff. Commissioner Rein noted the assistant is currently employed by the Courthouse, not the Sheriff's Department, prompting discussion of moving the position onto the Sheriff's pay scale.
Commissioners discussed the rationale for the initial raises and whether they were intended for recruiting deputies and jailers. Commissioner Burdett said those raises were tied to hiring and retention of deputies and jailers; Sheriff Atteberry argued the assistant supports law enforcement operations and should be included. A payroll change notice dated 6/4/26 was approved by motion (3-0) to place the Office Asst. III/Office Manager I under the Law Enforcement pay scale at step 5. "It is not that employees are not valued, but that wages need to be looked at objectively," Commissioner Rein said during the discussion. The board did not change county-wide policy on pay scales at that meeting; the approved motion adjusted this specific position as presented.
