Principal Farhit, in her second year leading Walnut Elementary, gave the Casa Conejo Municipal Advisory Council an overview of school programs and safety priorities and urged closer attention to pedestrian safety near the campus. She said Walnut is a Title I school and highlighted academic and wellness initiatives intended to support students.
Farhit described daily counseling support for emotional wellbeing, after-school enrichment including art and a "chicken club," universal access to Chromebooks and a revived school track. She told the council that the PTA's major fundraiser, a recent fun run, "raised $23,000" for school activities. On safety she listed annual updates to safety plans, controlled access procedures, volunteer clearance, tinted windows and alarm systems and said, "Safety is my priority for my students." The principal also flagged close calls at a crosswalk near Walnut and urged coordination with county traffic and public works for engineering solutions.
The council later established an Ad Hoc Committee to evaluate pedestrian-safety improvements in the Walnut Elementary area and noted that any changes will require coordination with partner agencies. The school calendar items reported included state testing beginning in about two weeks, AP testing to follow, and a last day of school on June 12.
The council did not vote on specific engineering projects during the meeting; next steps include the Ad Hoc Committee review and staff coordination with relevant county departments.
