Greenbriar aldermen pay increase approved by committee, sponsor says $120 to $300 a month

Chair recognized Chairman Kumar on House Bill 26-36, a private act from Greenbriar to raise aldermen pay from $120 per month to $300 per month. Kumar said the city's board had passed a resolution and asked the committee to advance the measure.
"There are 7 [aldermen]," Kumar said in answer to a committee question about board size. Chairman Hulsey raised a question about whether raises would apply to members nearing the end of their terms; Kumar suggested the rule may be intended to discourage leaving and noted constitutional limits on voting oneself a raise. Several members commented on the wide variation among small localities in compensation, and Vice Chairman Sparks observed that some small towns take no compensation.
The committee advanced House Bill 26-36; the clerk recorded 10 ayes, 0 nos and 1 present not voting.
