Principal says new middle/high school cell-phone ban "going well" after early enforcement

Vernonia School District Middle and High School Principal Nate Underwood told the Board of Directors the school’s recent cell-phone ban has produced positive early results. He said staff brought eight phones to him and “the students didn't argue or give him a hard time,” and that parents have been supportive when contacted about violations.
Board member Lisa Curry asked about potential legal ramifications of the consequences the district plans to impose for noncompliance. Superintendent Jim Helmen responded that the list of disciplinary measures has been reviewed and approved by the district’s legal counsel and is considered acceptable. The board discussed that OSBA is preparing a model cell-phone policy that districts will be asked to adopt once it is released.
The discussion was part of administrator reports provided at the Sept. 11 regular meeting. The board’s policy committee will meet to consider the OSBA guidance and align district policy; OSBA has indicated the draft model must be adopted by the end of October once circulated.
