Superintendent reports enrollment gain and lays out four SIP priorities

The Vernonia SD 47J superintendent told the board the district has seen enrollment growth this year and is focused on targeted improvements in instruction and student supports. "That's 42 new students total, from last year," the superintendent said, noting that figures will fluctuate but that staff are tracking where students are coming from and where they go when they leave.
The superintendent summarized four priorities in the district's continuous improvement plan: high-quality instruction, student engagement, consistent behavior systems and effective professional learning communities (PLCs/PLTs). "When we're having conversations with our community about what our real big focus is this year, you can see professional development and focus areas, high quality instruction, reading, writing, and math," the superintendent said. Board members asked for the SIP language to be updated to reflect the 2025-26 school year and requested that staff circulate final materials before the October action item. The board accepted the operating-agreement amendment and took action later in the meeting to formalize other agenda items.
