Vernonia district weighs options as Mist road construction threatens school access

Vernonia School District Superintendent Jim Helmen told the board Aug. 14 that the district learned the road to Mist would not be accessible at the start of the school year because of delayed construction. He said district leaders were weighing three options: bring Mist students to the Vernonia K–12 campus with Mist staff supporting them there, provide online instruction for impacted students, or delay the Mist school start until access is restored.
Helmen said the district planned to make a decision by the next day and that the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) hopes to complete the road work by Sept. 9. The board asked for continued communication with families; Director Amy Cieloha had earlier requested that schedules and changes be communicated early so scheduling issues could be handled before classes begin.
The board did not take a formal vote on the access options at the Aug. 14 meeting; Helmen said the district would continue to develop contingency plans, including revisiting the Mist water issue once access is available.
