Council adopts ordinance adding Fire Merit Commission to municipal code
Summary

The council adopted Ordinance 20-26-15 to amend Title 2 of the Bloomington Municipal Code to recognize and define the City of Bloomington Fire Merit Commission and to delineate duties between the Board of Public Safety and the new commission.
City attorney Chris Wheeler told the council the Fire Merit Commission was established "on 01/01/2025" by operation of law and that the ordinance updates the code to show that the commission — including its membership, terms and appointment process — exists and governs hiring, promotion and discipline of fire department members. After a short presentation and no public comment, the council voted to adopt the ordinance.
Councilmember Piedmont Smith noted that items like this could be considered for a consent agenda; the ordinance passed on the council’s vote tonight and will be reflected in the municipal code going forward.
