Board recognizes Forensic Science Week; DA lab director cites $2M grant and cold-case work

The Solano County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution recognizing Sept. 15–21, 2024 as National Forensic Science Week, praising forensic professionals’ role in criminal investigations and court proceedings.
Under-sheriff Brad Duall told the board that advancements in forensics have helped solve long-standing cold cases and thanked the county’s latent-print examiners, coroner technicians and forensic technicians for their daily work. Elaine Polito, laboratory director for the District Attorney’s Forensics Lab, outlined the lab’s services and said the lab "recently got a $2,000,000 grant" to acquire two advanced instruments for testing, and described the lab’s growth since opening in 2010.
Duall also described a county cold-case project that includes exhumation work and solicited public assistance via sheriff's office channels and social media. The resolution passed unanimously.
