Solano County Library marks 30 years of adult literacy services and outlines program reach

Library staff presented an overview of Solano County Library's adult literacy program, which staff said was established in 1994 and this year marks 30 years of services. David Lewis, senior program assistant, told the board the program has helped more than 8,000 learners since its founding and that more than 5,000 volunteer tutors have contributed roughly 253,000 hours supporting learners. "This year marks 30 years of adult literacy services in Solano County," Lewis said as he introduced the team and program goals.
Presenters described program components: adult basic literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), family literacy, Reach Out and Read partnerships with pediatric providers, and a Career Online High School pathway that allows learners to earn a diploma and career certificate online. Staff highlighted outcomes such as learners becoming U.S. citizens, improved workplace communication, and increased family engagement in reading. The presenters also emphasized the program's need for tutors, saying training takes about five hours and that tutoring is available at branch locations at times convenient to tutors and learners. The session closed with an invitation for community members and supervisors to support and help recruit volunteer tutors.
