Solano County proclaims September National Preparedness Month; OES urges residents to make plans and sign up for alerts

The Solano County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution recognizing September 2024 as National Preparedness Month by unanimous vote. Chair Mashburn said the county is susceptible to wildfires, floods and earthquakes and urged residents to be ready; the vote was recorded 4-0.
Robin Raines, the county’s Emergency Services Manager, gave a detailed overview of household preparedness steps and county alerting systems. "You need to make a plan. You need to have an emergency plan," Raines said, and she emphasized the difference between a home kit, a go-bag and a communications plan. She urged residents to "know your zone" and to sign up for county alerts at emergency.solanocounty.com and for Alert Solano, the county's public alert and warning platform. Raines explained that alert messages are targeted to households that must take protective action and encouraged neighbors to check on each other when alerts are issued.
Raines also described shelter-in-place versus evacuation orders, recommended exercising family plans annually, and highlighted voluntary community tools such as Watch Duty/Watch Duty–style neighborhood notification and the county's social channels for situational updates. The board accepted the presentation; no formal new obligations or budget actions were announced.
