Solano County supervisors declare September 2024 National Food Safety Education Month

The Solano County Board of Supervisors on the morning of the meeting adopted a resolution recognizing September 2024 as National Food Safety Education Month by a 4-0 vote. Chair Mashburn called for the motion and the clerk recorded the unanimous vote.

Supervisor Vasquez highlighted the public-health rationale behind the proclamation, saying, "one out of six people get some kind of foodborne illnesses every year," and stressing the county's role in protecting community well-being. James Busick, director of resource management, introduced the Environmental Health team and said the county’s food safety program focuses on restaurants while offering lessons residents can apply at home. Environmental Health Manager Trey Strickland described the consumer protection team’s work: inspections, outreach and programs such as childhood lead prevention and housing health inspections. "Our mission is to protect public health and the environment," Strickland said, introducing the staff who conduct routine inspections and outreach.

The board invited the Environmental Health staff forward for a photograph after the resolution and staff encouraged residents and food business operators to follow county guidance and prevention practices. No formal follow-up or additional board action was scheduled beyond the proclamation and the staff presentation.
