The Southgate City Council voted to accept a private $20,000 donation and ratify the purchase and training of a replacement police K‑9 on July 28.
Police Chief Manuel Arana asked the council to accept the donation and amend the FY26‑27 budget to recognize the revenue. "With Mr. [donor]’s donation of $20,000, that will virtually fund the entire purchase of the canine and training," Arana said, adding the department would cover the remaining $871 from asset forfeiture funds to meet the total invoice of $20,871.25 from Gold Coast K9 Services LLC. The chief described the department’s K‑9 program as an asset for public safety and officer safety, assisting in apprehensions, locating missing people and narcotics investigations.
The council resolved the item after brief public comment. Zoom participant Mario Dominguez questioned why a K‑9 was prioritized over a police‑grade drone; Arana and other staff said donations and grants often carry donor or grant restrictions that direct spending. The council’s motion to accept the donation and ratify the purchase passed in roll call.
City staff presented a plaque to acknowledge the donor and said the new dog will carry the name "Bordeaux."
