Coquille School Board directs superintendent to prepare $1.8 million in budget cuts after executive session

The Coquille School District #8 Board of Directors voted unanimously on Feb. 11 to direct Superintendent Wayne Gallagher to prepare $1.8 million in reductions to the district’s next fiscal-year budget.
Board members first voted to table the proposal earlier in the meeting while requesting additional information. Following an executive session under ORS 192.660(2)(f) and (i), the board returned to open session and approved the directive with a unanimous roll-call vote. Heather Echavarria moved the final motion, seconded by Sharon Nelson.
The board’s packet and discussion cited declining enrollment and projected operating pressures as drivers of the requested reductions. Gallagher had reported current enrollment of 1,181 students with a projected decline to about 1,130 next year, a decrease the district said would require evaluation of staffing and operational costs.
The motion directs the superintendent to prepare reduction scenarios for board review; the board did not adopt specific cuts on Feb. 11 and set no immediate implementation dates. The item will be considered as part of the upcoming budget adoption process in May–June.
