Lincoln School of Early Learning showcases hands-on science and UFLI phonics in board presentation

Lincoln School of Early Learning staff and students presented science demonstrations and literacy work to the Coquille School District #8 Board on April 8. Principal Amy May introduced classroom activities including oobleck experiments, baking-soda volcano demonstrations, butterfly life-cycle observations, walking-rainbow capillary tests, weather experiments and simple-machines lessons; Pre-K teacher Kaylee Shrum led several hands-on demonstrations and students spoke about vocabulary and concepts they had learned.
Dean of Students Cassie Green described Lincoln's implementation of the UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) phonics program, saying the school has focused on explicit, systematic phonics instruction, staff professional development and peer observations to align with the science of reading. Kindergarten teachers Mrs. Crook and Mr. Martin demonstrated portions of the program for the Board. Lincoln staff reminded families about upcoming preschool and kindergarten roundup opportunities.
