Select Board members debate highway pay and a proposed 6% increase

During the Jan. 13 Mount Holly Select Board budget workshop, members focused on Highway Operating Expenses and the town’s ability to recruit for an open Highway maintenance position.
Liz Karle outlined rising operating costs for the highway department and said equipment repair has been historically underbudgeted. Jeff Chase said pay rates need to be competitive to recruit for the open maintenance position. In response, Mark Turco proposed a 6% increase to pay or relevant budget lines to improve recruitment prospects.
The proposal was discussed but not formally moved to a vote during the workshop. Staff were tasked to incorporate wage and operating cost options into the next budget draft for the Select Board to consider at a subsequent meeting.
