Sweetwater County commissioners unanimously approve protest to BLM Rock Springs RMP/FEIS

The Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a protest letter to the Bureau of Land ManagementRock Springs Field Office proposed resource management plan amendment and final environmental impact statement at a special meeting Sept. 20.
Eric (staff member) told the board the county will add socioeconomic material, road-impact exhibits from the public works director, and GIS overlays to the protest package. "The biggest thing ... is BLM's lack of following procedures and process," Eric said, describing that as the "core" basis for the county's protest. The board voted to authorize the chair to sign the letter and to allow staff to make final edits.
Commissioner Toman made the motion to approve the letter; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Slaughter and carried by a unanimous voice vote. Chair praised staff, saying, "Job well done, and I'm proud to be a part of this team." The county intends to include maps and selected draft-EIS comments the FEIS did not respond to as exhibits in the final protest package.
The protest targets procedural and substantive issues the county says exist in the FEIS and requests BLM reconsider or respond to identified omissions. Staff said the finalized letter and supporting exhibits will be circulated when complete and that the chair will sign the document once final edits are made.
