Paramount resident urges council to prioritize prevention, behavioral health and youth programs

Enrique Alvarez Jr., a Paramount resident, graduate student in social work and a behavioral therapy group provider, addressed the council during public comment and urged a prevention-oriented approach to public safety. “Public safety begins long before someone enters the criminal justice system,” Alvarez said, describing his work with youth diversion and incarcerated individuals and urging stronger partnerships between city programs and local businesses.
Alvarez recommended increased investment in youth mentorship, behavioral health resources and expanded collaboration with employers such as Sprouts Farmers Market to offer internships and career-exploration opportunities. He said investments in parks, recreation and community programs are “more than amenities — they’re investments in safer neighborhoods and stronger families.” The council thanked Alvarez for his comments; staff and council members repeated support for continued behavioral health programming and partnerships.
