Commission to pursue CLG grant work focused on eligibility studies for two districts

Commission members discussed the 2026 Certified Local Government (CLG) grant application window and preliminary plans for using the grant to fund boundary-justification studies and determinations of eligibility rather than immediate full National Register nominations.
"The deadline to apply for CLG grants is September 15," Chairperson Christopher Brandt said, and he invited commissioners to join a small committee to help prepare the application and estimate professional fees. Brandt said the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) recommended a two-step approach: first a boundary justification and determination of eligibility, then pursuing National Register nominations later. "They recommended us that we not pursue a grant for the National Register nomination right away," Brandt said.
Commissioners tentatively agreed to form a small writing team to prepare the CLG application and to target studies for the Saint Paul Corridor and Laurelton districts. The approach is meant to clarify SHPO-approved scope before committing to full nominations.
