Planning board approves KeyBank signage with hours and east‑elevation removal condition

The Irondequoit Planning Board voted to approve signage for a new KeyBank branch at 1765 East Ridge Road, subject to conditions on illumination and removal of one façade sign.

Scott Wallenhorst, representing KeyBank, outlined plans for building signage on four faces, a monument sign and directional signs. He said the monument will be an 8‑foot by 3‑foot cabinet and that “the signage does stay illuminated throughout 24 hours” though the fixtures include a photocell that may turn them off in bright daylight. Kirk Wright, the signage consultant, confirmed the finalized monument dimension and explained the design change to remove an internal divider to produce an 8‑by‑3 panel.

Board members focused on lighting precedent in town. A board member who made the motion, Richards, said the board’s practice is to limit non‑safety lighting and proposed a condition that “all lights except for safety lighting be extinguished 2 hours after closing and reignited 1 hour prior to opening.” The motion also required elimination of the east elevation sign. The motion passed on a roll‑call vote with a majority present; two members were absent.

The board granted conditional approval so the applicant may proceed with production of signage but required that any outstanding operational details about whether the bank can program the signs to conform to the approved hours be resolved with KeyBank’s security and returned to the board if relief is needed. The applicant acknowledged they will confirm internal approvals with their security group and may return for modification if necessary.

Next steps: the applicant may finalize signage fabrication under the board’s conditions; if KeyBank requests different lighting controls later, it must return for board relief.
