Commission says Pioneer House roof work qualifies as repair, no full hearing required

The Irondequoit Historic Preservation Commission recorded one application for a certificate of appropriateness from the Town of Irondequoit covering roof work at the Pioneer House. Chairperson Christopher Brandt said the filing was limited to removing existing asphalt shingles, installing a new plywood deck and replacing shingles with a similar architectural asphalt shingle.
"The application was determined to be a repair or replacement in kind and thus not requiring a full hearing," Brandt said during the meeting. Commissioners clarified that the color of the replacement shingles "may be slightly different," but that the materials would be similar in type. The application expressly omitted gutters and downspouts.
Because the work was classified as repair in kind, the commission did not schedule a formal hearing and will accept the filing as complete. The decision preserves the commission's review role for more substantial alterations while allowing the town to move forward with necessary roof work on a locally significant property.
