YCIS counselor outlines Wayfinder SEL rollout and early results

Tina Hayward, the school counselor and TAG coordinator, told the board the district has integrated Wayfinder curriculum, tiger-time small-group interventions and a growth-mindset elective for 7th graders as part of its social-emotional learning (SEL) work. "The programs are integral to fostering a supportive school environment where every student can thrive," Hayward said, and staff are using Wayfinder assessments and teacher-collected measures to monitor progress.
Hayward described specific monitoring steps: Wayfinder fall assessments for grades 4–8, in-class formative checks in her growth-mindset elective, and scheduled reassessments to measure change. Board members asked about the assessment format; Hayward explained the child-facing tool uses a scale that shows social indicators (for younger students presented as faces) and that teachers will use the system to recommend tiered interventions. She said early teacher feedback shows promise and the district will continue to provide professional development to support implementation.
