Douglass Township removes officer from probation, approves conditional offer for new hire

The Douglass Township Board of Supervisors on Dec. 2 voted to remove Officer John Peters from probationary status and approved a conditional offer of employment for a new full-time police officer scheduled to start Jan. 6, 2025. Both motions were seconded and passed unanimously (Bergstresser-Aye, Stouch-Aye, Carpenter-Aye).
Chief Robert Evans told the board that "we currently have 12 and with the new officer we will be at 13." He added that "depending on calls for service and population most municipalities have between 13-15 officers," framing the hire as part of typical staffing levels for towns of similar size. The conditional offer was approved to allow background checks and onboarding to proceed ahead of the January start date.
The board recorded the actions in its minutes and did not discuss salary or specific candidate names at this meeting. The next Board of Supervisors meeting is Dec. 16, 2024.
