Commissioner backs $6,000 contract with Daughters of the American Revolution to restore Columbia County cemetery

The Columbia County Community and Services Committee on July 28 approved a $6,000 service agreement with the Augusta chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to create and maintain a park and preserve a Revolutionary War–era cemetery.
"This is a service agreement with the Augusta chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, to create a park and maintain a cemetery," Commissioner Scott Johnson said, recommending the item for approval. Chair, speaking about a site visit, said the grave site in Maple Creek was overgrown and volunteers were "carrying water with buckets because they didn't have a water tap," and that part of the funds will help install water for a garden and maintenance.
Staff presented the agreement as a small, targeted preservation project and recommended approval. A committee member moved the item to consent; the motion was seconded and carried by consensus. The committee did not set additional conditions or a separate funding source beyond the $6,000 noted in the agreement.
The committee did not receive public comment on the item. The agreement is intended to preserve the local historic resource and provide basic infrastructure for volunteer maintenance.
