Council urged to adopt 2024 WUI code after state bill passes; staff to clarify mapping discrepancy

City staff reviewed Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) adoption steps and recommended moving to adopt the 2024 WUI code following a recent legislative change. The presenter said the required steps for adoption are to pass an ordinance, adopt a high-risk map, and sign the cooperative Wildfire Suppression (CWS) agreement; they noted that a bill passed in the most recent legislative session requiring adoption of the 2024 code rather than the older 2006 version.
"There was a bill passed this legislative session... the new bill that passed Friday says you have to adopt the 2024 WUI code," the presenter said. Staff also reported a discrepancy between a map emailed by Brianne Liston and the version on the state website that shows most of Eureka in a high-risk zone; staff said they will confirm with Brianne which map the state recommends before returning to the council with a draft ordinance and map for adoption.
