Okeechobee council adopts ordinance removing elected city clerk and revising election rules

Mayor Dowling R. Watford, Jr. opened a continued public hearing April 21 and Assistant City Attorney Stephen Conteaguero read the amended title of proposed Ordinance No. 1327, which amends Chapter 26 (Elections) of the City Code. The ordinance removes the elected office of the City Clerk, adjusts qualifying periods for city council candidates, revises notice requirements for elections, and updates procedures for accepting canvassing board returns and issuing certificates of election. "AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF OKEECHOBEE, FL; AMENDING THE CODE OF ORDINANCES CHAPTER 26—ELECTIONS," Conteaguero read into the record.
There were no public comments during the hearing. On a motion made by Council Member Noel A. Chandler and seconded by Council Member Robert "Bob" Jarriel, the council held a roll-call vote and approved the ordinance on second reading by a unanimous 5–0 vote (Chandler—Yea; Clark—Yea; Jarriel—Yea; McAuley—Yea; Watford—Yea). The ordinance references changes tied to procedures now handled by the Okeechobee Supervisor of Elections and notes alignment with the 2022 City Charter. The council closed the public hearing at 6:28 P.M.; the ordinance will be codified and is effective as provided by its text.
