At the public hearing on July 28, Miss Chambers, the Liberty County county clerk, described how the restoration program is funded and the expense of individual restorations. Chambers said the county "is still collecting anywhere for 35 to 40,000 a month for this particular project," explaining that the office sends books out for restoration as funds become available and applies incoming fees to those costs.
Chambers also gave a per-volume cost estimate, saying restoration vendors charge roughly $3,000 per book. "They're about $3,000 a book," she said, adding that the work is not inexpensive but is justified by the historical value of the material. Chambers said the office has been pursuing a steady pace over several years and has expanded scanning so that residents can access digitized records online, reducing the need to handle heavy originals.
The hearing included no vote on additional appropriations or new funding sources during the segment; the clerk framed the update as ongoing program management tied to fee collections rather than a request for immediate additional county funding.
