Tennessee Achieves says coaching plus emergency grants raised graduation rates in pilots

Graham, representing Tennessee Achieves, outlined the Complete coaching and emergency grant program, which pairs students with coaches and provides microgrants for essential needs such as food, transportation and textbooks.
He said more than 26,000 students have participated since 2018 and Tennessee Achieves has dispersed more than 62,000 grants totaling about $7.9 million; typical grants average about $125 and may go up to $1,000 per semester. "Since the inception of this program in 2018, more than 26,000 students have gone through this program," Graham said, and he reported graduation rates among participating students of roughly 41% compared with single-digit rates for nonparticipants in the comparison cited.
Graham called for recurring funding to sustain and expand the program statewide and warned the pilot’s five‑year funding ends this year. Committee members asked clarifying questions about which populations were served and the projected impact of continued funding.
