The committee advanced House Bill 18,18 as amended; the amendment clarifies how districts apply the 1.5-mile transportation threshold.
Sponsor explained the amendment responds to an attorney general opinion: when a district chooses to pick up students beyond the 1.5-mile threshold it must do so for all such students. The bill also requires local education agencies to notify parents or guardians when transportation cannot be furnished and provides an option for parent/guardian payment in certain circumstances, according to the sponsor (Lawmaker (Speaker 15)).
A committee member confirmed the amendment resolved a prior subcommittee concern about the mile-and-a-half threshold and the bill was moved forward to the finance committee with unanimous support recorded by the clerk.
