Hackett Hill WMA project aims to create young-forest habitat for species of conservation need

Luke Beradinelli (NH Division of Forests and Lands) presented a forest-management proposal at Hackett Hill Wildlife Management Area near the Bearcamp River, planned for fall 2026 through winter 2027. The project would combine group selection harvests and larger patch cuts to establish young-forest habitat and support species identified as being of greatest conservation need in the state Wildlife Action Plan.
Luke reviewed habitat rankings, soil characteristics, wetland and beaver-pond protections, and management goals; he said an NHB review identified no records of concern within the project area. Commissioners discussed habitat objectives, migratory bird considerations, and that the older WAP habitat ranking map used in the presentation may differ from newly released 2025 mapping.
