State outlines 95-acre Hemenway harvest, plans shelterwood cuts in 2027–2028

At the June 8 meeting the Tamworth Conservation Commission heard from Matthew Lewis (NH Division of Forests and Lands) about a proposed 95-acre forest-management project in Hemenway State Forest, between Great Hill Road and Breakneck Hill Road. The project is planned for fall 2027 through winter 2028 and would use a shelterwood system intended to encourage regeneration of pine and hemlock while maintaining long-term forest health.
Lewis reviewed previous management activities, proposed wetland protections, and plans to reuse existing access routes and landings to limit new disturbance. The Natural Heritage Bureau review cited in the presentation found no records of rare species in the project area. Commissioners discussed forest regeneration goals, wildlife review processes, historic trail concerns, and the possibility of timber tax revenue to the Town from harvest activities.
