A Whiteville resident described persistent drug activity at a house on Martin Luther King Drive that residents say has become a neighborhood safety hazard.
"Across the street from 402 M L K, which my granddaughter in 1st grade has called the crack house," the resident said, adding that he times arrivals to avoid drug deals and alters when he plans to be home because of package theft risk (Resident, S2). He said he often must wait several minutes for drug deals to finish before he can approach his house.
The comments were made during the public-comment portion of the meeting as neighbors outlined how criminal activity near that address affects daily routines and safety perceptions. City staff later said police contacted property owners in at least one case and that property owners indicated they would work to remove people staying in the house; no arrest or formal charge information was provided on the record.
