The Alliance City Council unanimously approved an amendment Dec. 2 to the city's Firefighters Retirement Plan to add a new optional payment method for retiring firefighters. City staff described the change as administrative: it adds a distribution option but does not alter contributions, vesting, investment structure, or benefit calculations.
The staff report said the amendment implements changes from the 2025 Nebraska Legislature; the meeting record references LB 179 when describing the required update but also includes language referencing LB 686 in the resolution text. The council approved Resolution 25-169 on a motion by Councilman Turman, seconded by Councilman Hitchcock; recorded vote was 4–0. City officials were authorized to execute documents necessary to amend and administer the plan and to maintain qualification under federal tax rules.
