Klamath County approves one-year extension for medicolegal investigator contract

The Klamath County Board of Commissioners voted to approve Amendment 1 to a contract with MDI Associates that extends medicolegal death investigator services for one year, effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Helena Johnson of the district attorney’s office said the amendment raises the hourly compensation rate "from $55 an hour to $65 an hour."
Johnson told the board MDI Associates has provided medicolegal death investigation services for the last year; the DA’s office reviewed 321 deceased individuals in 2025 and has reviewed 158 so far in 2026. She said the contract approach produced an estimated $110,000 in cost savings compared with prior arrangements and kept autopsy workloads current.
Commissioner [speaker 2] moved to approve and authorize the chair to sign the amendment; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The DA’s office estimated the fiscal impact of the amendment at approximately $10,000 to the general fund contract services account. The board recorded no further discussion before approving the motion.
The immediate effect is an authorized contract extension through June 30, 2027; the DA’s office and county finance were identified as responsible for implementing the amendment and accounting for the estimated expenditure.
