Sponsor explained that House Bill 14-66 would require local education agencies and public charter schools to administer the presidential physical fitness test to measure strength, endurance and flexibility and to provide specified accommodations. The bill also would require written notice from the Department of Education at least 30 days prior to the school year and prohibit test results from negatively affecting a student's grade.
Representative Johnson asked how charter schools that lack PE teachers would administer and report the test. The sponsor responded that LEAs and charters may designate an individual responsible for physical fitness or recess to handle the test and reporting. The committee voted to advance the bill (17 ayes, 2 nays).
